A Remarkable Suffragette

Historian Angela John will talk about Lady Rhondda, the subject of her latest book at Dartmouth Library on Wednesday 16 October 6.30-8pm. Tickets costs £2 and include a glass of wine (devon.gov.uk/libraries). You can buy a signed copy of her book after the event, or from Dartmouth Community Bookshop where we have it in stock.

Turning the Tide tells the remarkable tale of Margaret Haig Thomas who became the Second Viscountess Rhondda. She was a Welsh suffragette, held important posts during the First World War and survived the sinking of the Lusitania. A leading British industrialist, she was also instrumental in securing a seat for women in the House of Lords. Closely associated with figures such as Winifred Holtby, Vera Brittain and George Bernard Shaw, she founded and edited the progressive weekly paper Time and Tide. Drawing upon a rich array of sources, many previously unused, Angela V. John explores both the public achievements and the fascinating private world of one of the movers and shakers of British society in the first half of the twentieth century.

Angela V. John is a widely published historian and biographer. For many years she held the chair in History at the University of Greenwich, London. She is now an Honorary Professor at Aberystwyth University. She is a vice-president of Llafur, the Welsh People's History Society. This is her tenth book, published by Parthian.

My mother always taught me that a good parent is always prepared for its child's needs. You should buy the baby's crib even before you have given birth so that you have a place for it to sleep once that it is born.
